Qabalistic numerology is called Gematria. This involves nothing more than taking the numerical value of each Hebrew letter in a word, and adding those values together. Theoretically, words of the same total value bear some conceptual relationship, although the principle can be taken to absurd extremes. Gematria can be a petty trap.
We are dealing with the language of symbols. And if one seeks a language for the elucidation of daily problems of worldly folk then the meanings to be found in any cartomancy book may serve very well, however arbitrary they may seem. If one seeks higher wisdom then one may do better to go to the classical systems of Pythagorean numerology or Qabalah for a language that can do justice to the concepts involved. The strength of the Tarot is that it can cater for either approach equally well.
The horrible antithesis of Ain Soph is the abyss, the Kliphos of the Kabalah. The Kliphos are atomic and tenebrous, of the lunar path. Let us analyse the Primordial Divine Atom from which emanate the Ten Sephiroth of the Kabalah. Beyond the Theosophical Triad there is a Ray which unites us with the Absolute. That Ray within each man is the resplendent Dragon of Wisdom, the Internal Christ, the Sephirothic Crown. The Kabalah defines it thus We should not forget that Mercabah is the Chariot of the Ages, the Celestial Man of the Kabalah.
The messages which descend from the world of Pure Spirit become symbolic in the astral plane. These symbols are interpreted according to the Law of Philosophical Analogy, the Law of Analogy of Opposites, the Law of Correspondences and Numerology. Study the Book of Daniel and the biblical passages of the Patriarch Joseph, son of Jacob, so that you may be able to learn to interpret your astral experiences.
TEN OF PENTACLES, Lord of Wealth (Mercury in Virgo). Angels of the Decan Hahaayah ( Pyrin) and Laviah (iPiKi ). This is Malkuth in Assiah, the influence of Malkuth in the material World. Mercury, God of commerce, rules the earthly sign Virgo. Its placement here assures material gain so vast that it may lose its importance, a situation described as an embarras de richesses.
SIGN Virgo (Mutable Earth) Insofar as the sign Virgo is attributed to the twentieth Path, we understand the Hermit to be ever-virgin, pure, and totally innocent. And insofar as it represents a gateway to the bridge between Macroprosopus and Microprosopus, it involves certain qualities of Daath. Insofar as THE HERMIT is the Adept-Magician, he is the agent of the Supreme Will and, as such, the Thirty-Two Paths of Wisdom calls the Twentieth Path the Intelligence of Will. There is a strong link between THE HERMIT and the Path of THE MAGICIAN (the Intelligence of Transparency) since Virgo is ruled by Mercury. This means that the Philosophic Mercury ultimately directs the course of the Yod-Fire on the Paths. The fact that Virgo is an earth sign may be somewhat confusing in that any discussion of THE HERMIT invariably centers on the idea of Fire. Hopefully it has been understood that the Fire in question here is not the same as either Elemental Fire or Maternal Fire. THE HERMIT could be...
The apprentice should read the entire Handbook through once then start at the beginning and pursue all the exercises at his or her own pace. For the more experienced student, there are interesting exercises and theories relating the Tarot to the Cabala, Astrology and Gnothology, or esoteric Numerology.
In numerology the meaning of the number 9 is absolute passivity. Thus the hermit is also completely passive within himself. He has become totally detached and does not participate in worldly activities. If he performs his everyday duties at this level of consciousness, his motives are utterly unselfish. The number 9 has several strange qualities. For instance, if we add it to another number, whether high or low, this will not change the sum of the digits. Let us take as our first example the low number 17. The sum of the digits is 8. If we add 9 to 17 the result is 26. Again, the sum of the digits is 8. Now let us take the higher number 435. The sum of the digits is 12, by numerological reduction, 3. If we now add 9 to 435, the result is 444. The sum of the digits is again 12 and 3 respectively. If we add any number to the number 9, the sum of the digits always remains constant. The number 9 shows another strange characteristic if we conduct the following experiment make a vertical...
One of the most important ideas to be added by late medieval scholars was that numerological links could be found between words (and thus between concepts) using Gematria. The introduction of Gematria served two purposes. First, it helped to assure that scribes would spell names precisely as received second, it tended to serve as an incentive for serious meditation on the Names.
The third triangle is very interesting. The Magic triangle is made up of the mind, that is Netzach, the Astral Body or Hod and the Etheric Body, that is to say, Jesod, the basic sexual principle of Universal Life. Why is it called a Magic triangle Because undoubtedly in the Kingdoms of the Mind, of the Astral, and even of the Kliphos or Infernal worlds is where one exercises High Magic. There are ten waves of life which penetrate and interpenetrate without mixing with each other. Those ten Eternal Emanations are the ten Sephiroth of the Kabalah the ten branches of the Tree of Life. Now we understand why God put ten fingers on our hands.
NINE OF PENTACLES, Lord of Material Gain (Venus in Virgo). Angels of the Decan Hazayel (i K'tn) and Aldiah (rr *Ti N). This is Yesod in Assiah, the influence of Yesod in the Material World. Venus in Virgo brings great efficiency, but with a relative lack of overt feelings. The aspect tends also to favor the amassing of things it is thus a card of material gain. This is suggested by the Golden Dawn Pentacles, each of which has a fully-developed rose bud beside it, the central one having two buds to indicate continuing growth and acquisition on the physical plane.
The COMPARISON CHART is set up similarly to those for the Minor and Court Mentors. In the section governed by YOD, you will find the TETRAGRAMMATON, PRINCIPLE and EXPRESSION references, as covered in the last chapter. And in the first HE section, ASTROLOGY and GNOTHOLOCY are included as before. Both of these occult sciences are closely tied to theTarot, but there is no room to go into either in detail at this point. They are included mainly for those of you already advanced in Astrology and esoteric Numerology, so that you can understand more fully their interrelationships with the Tarot. The beginning student need not be concerned about these references-
